Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle

By: Diana Wynne Jones

A whimsical cozy fantasy quite different, but no less lovable, than the anime by Hayao Miyazaki.

I'll let it be no secret that I adore Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's version of this story, so I was both a little nervous and excited to begin the original book. It was really fun though!

The story was a bit more convoluted and layered than I expected with several more characters important to the story. Where I did enjoy the romance aspect a lot more in the anime version, both Sophie and Howl are delightful in the book! I love Sophie's temper and hidden jealousy and Howl's just a whining, dramatic ass. My favorite was him "dying" of his man-cold. Lol, I've known men like that...

The story is slow and meandering but the writing is full of humor and the constant bickering between Sophie and Howl had me hum with laughter more than once.

In the eternal battle between book and movie, the movie might still be my favorite, simply for its nostalgic vibe and for being my to-go comfort movie during hard times.

And of course Calcifer. The visualization of the fire demon is just too adorable.
