An upper YA/NA romantasy with fae x human and a quest for history.

I didn't really love this book, must admit. I think first of all, I'm not at all the target audience so in that sense, take it with a grain of salt. The whole human girl matched with mystical dark fae isn't really my jam so I'm not even sure why I picked this one up, lol.

There was a lot of good things. I loved the concept of searching for one's history and the snippets of old lore and legends weaved into it. The fight for freedom from your oppressor is always a selling point for me, and the diversity with the characters was a fresh breath for me and I'm realizing how terrible I am at reading diverse authors! Something I really need to change ASAP. There's was lots of lovely descriptions that made the read very vibrant.

I'm not quite sure what the age is for this. It read like YA, but there's a sudden spicy scene (which I definitely think can fit in an upper YA book) and knowing it's a US print, I was quite surprised. So my guess would be upper YA or New Adult.

What didn't quite work for me was the romance. It was setup rather stiffly and felt a bit like a forced triangle. I'm not really a fan of the "dark mysterious fae with lots of power falls for the rando human girl" trope, so in that aspect the romance was a hard sell even with the lack of chemistry. Further, the main character had a little too much Mary Sue for my liking, and it felt like the main plot kind twisted and turned all the time. I'd loved for more focus on searching for the history!

The final twist in the story didn't sit right with me at all so the ending kinda fell flat unfortunately. It had needed a much better build-up to allow the proper gasp effect.
