The Full Moon Coffee Shop by Mai Mochizuki
A cute, quick read that has you start questioning your path in life.
I'd never heard of this book before, but my partner saw it in the airport bookstore and was like "Look! A book with cats! You'll probably love it!" and the blurb promised cats who served dessert and offered life wisdom, so I mean...what's not to love then?
It was a very cute and surprising read! I did not expect it to go full on astrology, but it did. Complete with zodiac signs, houses and star charts.
I'll be blunt: I've never cared for astrology. I've always found it to be a bit...silly (sorry, don't hate me!).
However, the way it was presented in this book (maybe because it was the cats who talked about it) really piqued my interest. It was more of a general philosophy of guidance and self-exploration than a set path dictated by burning gas millions of miles away (yes I'm still skeptical, lol). I did end up doing my own natal chart though which was...surprisingly spot on.
Anyway, enough on that.
The story consists of three chapters (or desserts) with three different main characters who are all intertwined in some way, though they do not know it. The first POV is from a writer and her struggle with success and failure really hit close to home!
It's stories of finding your way out of chaos and "failure" and search for a path the fulfills and soothes you. It heavily resonated with my own practice of mindfulness and the way the whole thing came together in cosmic karma and balance was very heartwarming. It made me think of my own 'career' as a writer and author and reminded me of staying true to what feels good for me and my path.
It also made me realize that I'm reading way too much 'white and western' stuff! The small peek into Japanese culture and the descriptions of Kyoto was such a lovely fresh breath. Definitely need to get better at diversifying my reads.
A quick soothing read for the soul.
