Your Blood and Bones by J. Patricia Anderson (Root of the World Publishing, 2023)

A mesmerizing dark fantasy (horror?) of dark magic, slow changes, and a will to survive.

One of my favorite things is just to start reading a book without knowing anything about it except my friends has told me I'd really love it.

I had zero idea what this was about (not read the blurb - I so rarely do, lol), but the fact there was a freaking zombie raft in the very beginning just had me hooked in so many ways!

The odd, dark magic, the slow transition to "monsters", the brutal beginning, and the author's choice to keep the writing fairly anonymous (the MC's are simply "the boy" and "the girl") really made this an outstanding read and I really wish it'd been longer!

Or maybe not. I think it was exactly the right length, but the world and lore were really intriguing and could easily be put into a bigger story too.

It had a great folklore vibe and, again, I was really hooked by the mysterious dark magic that is never fully explained, nor need to be. The semi body-horror-esques descriptions of the MC's slowly turning into "monsters" and fighting it were heartbreaking and kept the tension throughout the read. My own skin itched several times!

Definitely worth checking out if you want something not spooky, but kinda eerie, with folklore vibes and MC's with a will to survive.
