So, I thought this was the final book, but now I'm not entirely sure. (Update! It's not the final book! Book 8 is releasing in 2025!)
It feels like an end, and then not. There’s a lot of needed closure and storylines that are being tied up nicely. It's a satisfying and sweet finish if this is the end, but there are still some open spots for another adventure to be had, especially that final twist. And there’s a magic tree I’d like to see chopped down and used for fire wood….
First half of the book (almost exactly to the 50% mark) is very cozy and sweet, and it is a bit of a shift from previous books to have such a long sequence of 'nothing too bad is happening'. It's nice though, and dwelling on the slow traveling and adventuring is very comforting. It allows for friendships and tender moments and to expand a bit on the world and lore. You also know it won’t last which keeps you on the edge, for having read six books now on Kari’s adventure you know that Valerie is a master of turning the tables from sweet to dark and tense within the span of one short chapter.
This book is no different!
There’s absolutely a *gasp* oh no you didn’t!! moment that kicks the story into gear and the brings the stakes and tension up to 100%. Without spoiling too much, it means Kari and Guine are up for another duo-adventure which is wonderful because they really are my favorite platonic couple!
Raven is again our main protagonist and we get to take a trip to her domain that is both dark, eerie, and oddly intriguing. I'd absolutely love a prequel from Raven's perspective to learn more about how she ended up where she did and what her journey has been. She's such a wonderful villain and this chapter in Demon Storm really adds a new dimension to her.
As mentioned earlier, there's a lot of needed closure in this book for several of our main characters, but still a few loose ends that may or may not get more attention. I don't think it's strictly needed, but I'd absolutely pick up a book no. 8 or even or a special edition of Raven's story!
